Welcome to MAUI ...of the MidWest.
We're the "Madison Area Ukulele Initiative", a club of approximately 115 ukulele players, based in Madison, Wisconsin, who enjoy promoting this instrument and it's potential for musical community. We do so by facilitating and participating in group sing-along-strum-alongs. Our Sunday, monthly gathering is free and open to the public. It occurs 11am to 1:30pm on the 3rd Sunday of each month and typically draws 15 to 20 participants. That's a lot of ukuleles ...and a whole lot of fun ! ...so much fun that the Wisconsin State Journal recently paid us a visit.
The "uke" is unique in its accessibility. For many people, it's a kind of quirky jack-in-the-box that initially intrigues them; then out pops ! the surprise realization that being a musician could be so simple; could be so enjoyable; could be so positively addicting.
As a national trend, the emerging popularity of ukulele clubs is a clear endorsement of simplicity and community. As a singular instrument, think of the ukulele as a brightly-colored, musical post-it-note, reminding us to take an "analog vacation" from our digital days (or is that "digital daze" ?). If this kind of wander-lust is wanting you, we've got the perfect place for you to wander to; MAUI :-)
