Have you been asking: “What are some new strum patterns I could learn?” and “How do I know which patterns match which songs?” Are you strumming every song the same way? Variety in strumming adds significantly more interest for listeners. So it’s a laudable goal. But it also poses significant challenges like multi-tasking, both hearing and holding rhythm, and the discipline to learn an action until it becomes reflexive or automatic. We’ll review the 10 foundational patterns introduced in Continuing-Beginner class and give many more examples of how patterns can be combined and changed within a song. Tips will be offered for how to best learn multi-tasking. We’ll start exploring a couple types of “strokes” that can be applied to patterns and then wrap-up by explaining how you can create custom strumming accompaniment for songs you love.
Consider taking the Strumming Level-1 class if you 1) took the Continuing-Beginner class and really enjoyed it 2) feel confident changing between most of the Continuing-Beginner chords 3) want to work on learning how to multi-task 4) find yourself in a “strumming rut” and would like to add more variety to your accompaniment
TECHNICAL FOCUS: The level-1 strumming class focuses on when to strike the strings (patterns). The level-2 class focuses on “how” to strike the strings (strokes). Together, they cover approximately 10 basic patterns, 10 strokes, and a near limitless number of permutations.
